While most children complete toilet training by the time they are 3, others may take longer. Why is that?

Potty Training Advice:
DEVELOPMENTAL READINESS
Some children are not as physically or developmentally ready to receive and interpret the same signals that tell the rest of us, "It's time to go to the bathroom."  While some recieve the signal, their muscles may not be able to "hold it" until a potty is available.  Our potty training advice:  it is best in these situations to wait a little longer until your child is more mature.   Do not force potty training.

Potty Training Tips:
REGRESSION
This potty training tip has to do with family positioning: placement in the family can hasten or impede toilet training. We often hear of a toddler who was successfully potty trained.  But, when his baby brother appears on the scene, he reverts back to being the "baby" to get more attention...and being the "baby" may mean dreaded diapers, again...for a little while.  Our potty training advice:  Let the older child feel like a big brother or sister and help with bathing, feeding, dressing and diapering new baby. Once toddler establishes his role, comfortably, as helping with baby, but not being one, toddler will stay out of diapers.

Potty Training Advice:
on BIG KID PULL-UP PANTS

Here's some interesting potty training advice based on letters from our customers:  Big Boy and Big Girl diapers or undies that are really diapers actually delay the potty training process.  While wearing them, toddlers may be too comfortable and content -- they have little motivation to become independent of the diaper and get trained.

Potty Training Tips:
HEREDITY

Did you know that readiness to toilet train may be hereditary?  If you or your spouse were trained at a late age, it is likely that one or more of your children will also be trained later.  So, try to remember back to when you were potty trained and you may find interesting answers.

Potty Training Tips:
SIBLINGS CAN HELP
For younger siblings, potty training may be quicker, as they watch big brother or sister use the potty and want to immitate this wonderful role model. Our potty training advice:  It is natural for younger children to watch an older sibling "go potty".  Try not to curtail this activity.  Our first lessons are ones of "immitation".

Potty Training Tips:
PARENTAL MODELING

Let toddler be in the bathroom with you! Moms and Dads make great role models.   While the bathroom need not be a public thoroughfare, never make your child feel as if the bathroom is a "secretive" place where strange things happen.

Luckily, for busy parents there are a whole host of products that facilitate the toilet training process.  We offer you the best of them -- a wide variety of excellent products and special deals on everything you need to potty train your child successfully.  After all, we've been in this business for 18 years!

The most important potty training tip:  Kids are different and respond to different toilet training methods.  Take the time to find out what motivates your child.  FOR EXAMPLE:

"Diapers forever, Mommy!
Glad you found these extra, extra, extra, extra, extra, large ones!"

For kids who need to be motivated and more in control, we suggest a potty training system of incentives and rewards like Potti Pets...a simple program that also teaches children to be responsible for their own actions.  If all you need is a chart and stickers, see our adorable personalized potty charts.   Toddler will thrill to see his/her own name on a special potty chart made to order.

For visual learners, we suggest any of our great potty training videos or a well illustrated fun potty book.

Toddlers who respond best to sound will love a musical potty.

For little boys, what could be more fun than aiming at funny targets  in the toilet and trying to sink them?

If your child want to be a "big" boy or girl and sit on an actual toilet, we have special flip seats and cushioned potty seats that adapt to a grown-up toilet. We even have Sponge Bob, Blues Clues and Sesame Street potty seats to make toddler comfortable in the bathroom and on the road.  And, it's a good idea to have a sturdy step stool around, which leads to independence, both at the toilet and the sink.

A potty training tip for starting:  Ask yourself, "what potty training approach will work best in my family?"  Then choose a method, type of seat or combination of products that will appeal to your toddler and be easy to use.

Congratulations on taking the first step.  We're glad to have helped you.
